Below are my video presentation and final outcome. FeedbackProject submitted for grading. ReflectionsExperience
All in all, this project was very challenging for me and has taught me a lot of things regarding 3D modeling, animation and motion graphics. Observations This project took longer to make then I expected but also allow me to learn things that I never knew was possible. Findings Overall, I am pretty happy with the outcome of my project. I have also learned a lot and gain more experience in creating 3D projects. I learned how things should be done, how long would each process take and many more.

LectureConsultation period as usual. InstructionsThis week will be the final compositing and rendering done. Also, I tested the colours and lighting. (Playblast and screenshots in the google drive folders). FeedbackThis week Ms Li Lian said that I need to make sure that everything will be completed on time, since I have not rendered my video. Also I still need to complete the presentation video. ReflectionsLectureConsultation period as usual. InstructionsThis week I'll be finishing with all the animations and compositing. Here are a few inspirations on the art style and colour I'll be going for. FeedbackMs Li Lian said that I have to work faster as the deadline is coming soon, so I'll have to meet up with her to show my progress next week. ReflectionsExperience
This week I really need to balance my work load as the deadline is coming closer. Observations During the production process there are some unexpected things that happen and thus slowing down the process. Findings In the future, I will make my timeline taking into considerations all the hiccups that might happen. LectureConsultation period as usual. Instructions This week plan is to work on the blocking and animation. However, when rigging my paper crane, I came to a problem. It still need to be fixed but other than that, I have started on my blocking. Also, I have decided to use a design that relates to Chinese calligraphy for my art style because it compliments the idioms. I will mostly use black and white for the models and as for the background, I will use a tea stained looking paper to compliment the calligraphy style. FeedbackMs Li Lian suggest I quickly find a solution for my paper crane, which I will then later consult Mr Kannan and find a fix to it (day after consultation). Other than that, she is okay with the style that I have chosen. As for the explanation of the idiom which is going to be in English, Ms Li Lian suggested a few typefaces which are Century gothic, avenir and gil sans. These typfaces are simple and will not over shine the rest of the visuals but also aesthetically pleasing. ReflectionsExperience
This week I'm finally able to finish all the modeling and rigging and focus on blocking. I will have to start looking for the right textures for my models. Observations I forgot to plan on the typeface that I will use for the explanation part until Ms Li Lian mention it. And although I am getting things done this week I still need to do things in a faster pace as I still have other modules to finish. Findings I learned how to fix the rigging problem from Mr Kannan, however he did mention that what helped me with is just a simple solution to my problem. There is a more advanced way to do it but it will take time for me to learn them, so I'll have to save that for next time. Ms Li Lian also taught me about the usage of different typfaces on my project. LectureConsultation period as usual. InstructionsThis week planning is to finish up with modeling and start animating. (Model files can be found in the Google drive folders). FeedbackLuckily Ms Li Lian was pretty impressed with the models and again she reminded me that I have to work on the animations faster. Which I agree on. ReflectionsExperience
It has been a while since I last modeled anything in Maya so it was though in the beginning, especially now that I am using a newer version of Maya, some things are different Observations Some things are easier to model, obviously. This time the hardest would be the Cranes and the Lips as it is crucial to get it right for rigging. Findings Planing on what the model will look like really helped me as it makes the modeling process faster. However sometimes things are just hard to model. LectureConsultation period as usual. InstructionsOn my timeline this week, I were to continue modeling my assets. However I was packed up with other modules and were only able to come up with the designs. I will be modeling this week and hopefully get the blocking done by next week so that I can start animating. FeedbackMs Li Lian weren't able to give me that much feedback as I did not come up with a lot of things to show her. She reminds me that time is running out and that I should start working on a faster pace. ReflectionsExperience
This week I am very behind on my progress which is very worrisome. Observations I wasn't able to get my work done up to pace because I did not take into account of other modules when I was creating my initial timeline. Hence, the progress are halted. Findings This week I decided to work on my timeline and really progress according to it so that I can get my project done on time. Target for next week is to get the models done and hopefully start working on my blocking so I can proceed to animating. LectureAs usual, we do not have any lectures but consultations instead. InstructionsAlthough according to my timeline I am supposed to start designing and modeling my assets, I wasn't able to finish the task according to the timeline. During this week's consultation, I updated Ms Li Lian on my storyboard and seek for her feedback. FeedbackMs Li Lian's feedback on my storyboard is that some parts can be more exciting. As for 背腹受敌, she mention that using the text instead of item will be better as the project is more on the idiom. Also she suggested that I get started on the designing and modeling real quick or I wont have enough time which I agree. ReflectionsExperience
This week's consultation was constructive and made me realise that I have to work on my production pace. Observations With the time limit and other works that I have, I will need to settle my work load management properly and make sure everything can be done on time. Findings All in all, I will be creating the designs and start modeling the assets that I need. Not only that, I will manage my workload by creating a detailed timeline for not only this project but also other projects in order to control my working pace. LectureAs I am leaving for London this Wednesday, I will not be able to attend class and hence will not be having tutorial with Ms Li Lian. InstructionsFor this week in my timeline, I am supposed to start designing and modeling my assets. However, as I need to add extra idioms, I had to work on the storyline and the storyboard for a few other idioms. Ms Li Lian and I decided on 5 idioms last tutorial, but after some considerations I was not sure that I will be able to complete them with the time constrain that I have. Thus, I requested to do just 3 and Ms Li Lian agrees under the circumstances that I will make 5 if time allows. 守口如瓶 - To keep one's mouth shut A few lips that are squeezed into the bottle and as it goes in, the lips will transform into the individual Chinese characters and form the idiom. One lip will try to squeeze itself out the bottle and a cork will come and cover the mouth, pushing it back in the bottle and ultimately covering the bottle. 自由自在-To be free Five origami cranes inside a cage tries to escape and finally gets out of the cage. As they fly, they unfolds one by one and form the characters. 背腹受敌 - Receive attack on both front and in the rear A guy stands in the middle of the screen, panicking as he is being “attacked” by the Chinese characters that come from both his right and left. 凹凸不平 - Describing something that is uneven A car animates from the left side of the screen and as it pass by, the characters emerge from the land causing the car to jump up and down. 垂涎三尺 - The mouth watering with desire A hamburger is being eaten, camera quickly pans away to reveal a guy looking at it with his mouth watering and forms the characters. Below are my storyboards: FeedbackI have not gotten feedback from Ms Li Lian for this week as I will not be attending tutorial. Any feedback on this week's progress will be updated in the next blog. ReflectionsExperience
I really had fun doing the storyboards for this project and it was quiet a challenge as I have to consider if the animations are possible to be done. The storyline were tweaked several times because of this. Observations Having really little knowledge on motion graphics in Maya, I had to really look into each detail of the animation and look up some tutorials while doing the storyline and storyboard. This shows me how important storyboards are in order to allow a smooth progress during my production period. Findings This week I have learned quite a few stuff in Maya after watching several tutorials and has allow me to figure out what can and cannot be done for my project. LectureThis week we do not have any lectures but instead individual tutorial/consultations with Ms Li Lian. InstructionsThis week on my timeline, I am to finalise the idiom that I want to use, the art style I'm going for and produce a storyboard for the animation. However I have not created my storyboard as I would like to seek confirmation with Ms Lilian, although I do have a story-line thought up. The storyboard will be created later this week after the tutorial. I have chosen to use 守口如瓶 and the artstyle I'm going for is as the references below. (Workout Fail Gifs. JeanPierre Le Roux, 2016) Storyline - As the idiom that I have chosen literally means "shoving mouth into bottle", my animation will be a few lips that are squeezed into the bottle and as it goes in, the lips will transform into the individual Chinese characters and form the idiom. One lip will try to squeeze itself out the bottle and a cork will come and cover the mouth, pushing it back in the bottle and ultimately covering the bottle. FeedbackDuring the consultation, Ms Lilian mention that doing only one idiom is too little for an overall project. She suggested to do a few more and we decided on 5 idioms. I will have to come out with a storyboard as soon as possible in order to continue with my project. RefelctionsExperience
This week's consultation was fairly quick as I did not have anything much to show Ms Lilian. I reckon that in the following weeks, I will need to produce more stuff to show her before the consultation. Observation This week's progress is a bit tardy because we had our FYP presentation and I was too focused on it. And the fact that next week some of us will be going for the activity week, I will need to speed up my progress. Findings As a conclusion, I will try and create a storyboard as soon as possible in order to find out my work load and time my production correctly. I will also like to quickly start with next week's progress so and make sure everything is up to pace before the trip. LectureThis week we do not need to attend class as Ms Li Lian is not available. However she gave us some feedback on our proposal and journal. We were also told to continue with our progress as per our timeline that was made in the proposal. We were also divided into groups for consultations in the weeks following. This is to save time as we only have a 4 hour class with Ms Li Lian every week.. InstructionsAs per the feedback given, I need to amend the concept section in my proposal. I was not sure on how I should fix it so I referred to some of my classmates' concept section. From what I understand, I need to expand my concept and give a little more explanation as to how the product of my project will affect the target market. Not only do we have to correct our proposals, we were told to update Ms Li Lian on our progress, and to show her this, we have to create a folder in the shared Google Drive in which we will post our progress every week. According to the timeline that I have created, my task this week is to do research on the idiom that I can use to make my motion graphic; also, I will look and think of ways to animate the letters in the idiom so that the viewers will understand them. I made changes to my concept and made it so that the purpose and goals of the project is clearer. With this, the idea and concept of my project is more solid. The updated proposal has been uploaded to the shared Google Drive. For my research, I tried to remember a few idioms that I have learnt and also referred to my old school books and of course, Mr Google. When researching, I take into account the complexity of the letters and most importantly the meaning of the idiom. This is crucial as it would affect the animation I will need to create; will the viewers understand what I am trying to imply? I will also need to choose something that will allow me to animate them in a way where it is not too simple that it's boring, but at the same time not too complex as 1) I might have trouble animating it and 2) the viewers might not understand what the animation is telling them. While searching on the internet, I came across an article that shows an image of a few idioms with pictures replacing some of the characters. This has triggered a few ideas for me as to how I should imply the meaning of the idioms. However this depends on what the idiom is, I might be able to take the characters literally and individually, or I might have to treat them as a whole. While looking through a few images, I remembered how I used to be taught in primary school. In our textbooks, they used to tell stories in order to explain the meaning, mostly either the origin of the idioms or situation in which the idioms can be used. As an example: "井底之蛙"。This idiom literally translate to "bagai katak dalam tempurung" which describes someone who is not knowledgeable or are not open minded. To explain this, the book tells a story of a from, being too comfortable in its well, not knowing that the sky is wider than what he sees from his well. Even when a bird comes to tell the frog about the outside world, he refuses to believe the bird. At this point it is more about how I would animate the idiom rather than finding one. There are tons of them out there and I would just need to choose. After reviewing a few, I come to the realization that it will be great to pick an idiom that describes things. For example "人山人海"。Literally, it means people mountain people sea, makes no sense. The actual meaning however is describing an crowd of people, like what you can see in concerts or a soccer match. From here, it was easier for me to narrow down a few idioms that I can use:
FeedbackFrom the feedback given, Ms Li Lian mentioned that most of us has mistakes in certain parts of our proposal. Majority of us misunderstood the meaning of "concept". "an abstract idea; a general notion synonyms: idea, notion, image, impression, picture, style" Some other feedback are also given, but are not relevant to me. Here is the complete version: ReflectionsExperience
It was not easy to search and narrow down the idioms that can be used for my project. I wasn't sure where to start and the least i could do was typing “成语” (cheng yu, idioms) on google. From there I have gotten ideas on how I should choose my idiom and the way i should explain and animate the characters. Overall it is a very constructive research that has allow me to move on to the next step of my project. Plus, I get to reminisce the good old school days. Observation The biggest challenge I face while researching and choosing the idiom i should use is to achieve my objective of letting people understand the meaning of the idiom just by watching the animation as (I believe this is the same for all languages) idioms tend to be very figurative. In order to let people understand the idioms, I have to make sure they do not perceive the animation wrongly and take the figurative interpretation literally. Thus I find it easier to select an idiom that is describing something as I can animate the characters based on the description that it i Findings After narrowing down my list (which could easily be extended as long as it may), I have chosen my top 3 from the list which are: 参差不齐 - Being untidy, uneven 倾盆大雨 - Raining cats and dogs 守口如瓶 - To keep one's mouth shut The reason I chose these idioms is because I have a rough idea on how I could animate them and I think that it will look pretty interesting. Ultimately I will only choose one of them, that is after I have a clearer vision of what each would look like.
